Our Story
Mesh was first established in 2022, among ASU’s School of Arts, Media and Engineering, MIX (Media and Immersive eXperience) Center, and Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, as a dedicated hub for designing and producing immersive media experiences. The initiative was spawned out of the ASU Meteor Studio research lab, where early prototypes, XR learning environments, and interdisciplinary student teams had already demonstrated the transformative potential of real-time, interactive media in education and storytelling.
Founded by Dr. Robert LiKamWa, the Mesh Guild System was created to scale that momentum into a sustainable program — one that combines structured mentorship, creative production pipelines, and cross-disciplinary collaboration across art, engineering, narrative design, and technical development. Its mission centers on empowering students to become skilled immersive media practitioners while delivering high-impact XR experiences for classrooms, research partners, and public audiences.
Built on its ongoing tradition of uniting computational thinking with creative practice, Mesh Labs continues to expand the ecosystem into a place where students learn by making, innovate through collaboration, and contribute to the next generation of interactive and experiential media.
